Mary Ponchio, a mosaic artist from Miramar, Florida, has been making mosaics since 2001, exhibiting in various Miami galleries and other venues around the country.

A mosaic workshop instructor, she has also installed larger-scale mosaics in a number of South Florida homes.

Mary is a former member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA) and Grove House Artists in Coconut Grove, FL.

Always curious about mosaic art, I smashed the first plate in 2001. It was a liberating experience, and the urge to create became a craze.

I recreated discarded chairs, made many decorative mirrors, covered tables with broken plates, tile, stained glass -- whatever worked.
For many years my primary interest remained with plate-breaking, the art of “pique assiette”.

Along the way I progressed to more traditional mosaic materials, such as smalti (a type of colored glass specifically made for mosaic and stone.)

My current work includes realistic portraits in smalti, and mosaic-inspired pendants.
